Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to review the results of non-operative treatment of odontoid fractures in Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Pretoria. Methods: Records for all patients treated for odontoid fractures from 2008 to 2018 were reviewed. 28 patients met the study criteria. Demographic data, mechanism of injury, associated injuries, neurology, imaging studies and treatment were reviewed. Results: There were 23 males and 5 females. The average age at presentation was 39.5 years. 25 patients were injured in road traffic accidents. Associated injuries were present in 21 patients, mostly involving the spine and head. 18 fractures were classified as Type II and 15 as Type III. Fracture comminution (5), angulation (6) and translation (10) were noted. Primarily treatment modalities were cones callipers, Philadelphia collar or halo vest. Fracture union was assessed radiologically at 3, 6 and 9 months. Type II and III fractures had high union rates at 6 and 9 months. Significantly displaced fractures had a statistically lower union rate (p = 0.0285) at 6 months. Conclusion: Minimally displaced odontoid Type II and III fractures can be effectively treated non-operatively in young adults. Extent of fracture displacement is the single important factor in non-union rate.

Abstract: Globalisation as a process is not only limited to economic perceptive rather it has profoundly shaped the political, social, economic technological and cultural landscapes at individual, family, community, local, national, regional, international and transnational levels. The current globalisation waves in all its dimensions have been identified as a major factor affecting the economic growth of both developed and developing economies. This study is meant to examine the impacts of individual dimensions of globalisation as well as its aggregate impact on the economic growth of Nigeria between 1970 and 2010. Using multiple regression analysis the results revealed that both economic and political globalization indices exert positive impacts on globalisation while social globalisation index exerts a negative impact dimension and indices of globalisation are based on the KOF 2009 globalization index. Hence, the aggregate impact of the indices (dimensions) exerts positive impacts on economic growth. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root test conducted to test for the stationarity of the time series. The study reports the differential effect of dimensions of globalization on economic growth and proper policy recommendations were proffered based on the empirical findings.
Alternative treatment of chemoresistant, recurrent or advanced ovarian cancer. Part II

Przegl?d Menopauzalny , 2011,
Abstract: Lack of satisfactory efficacy of classical chemotherapy in ovarian tumours led to attempts of treatmentbased on use of small molecules able to modulate or inhibit intracellular pathways engaged in cell growth, proliferation and apoptosis. The paper presents clinical trials in ovarian cancer patients using such drugs as:1) protein kinase inhibitors, 2) molecules interfering with DNA transcription and repair, 3) inhibitors oftranscription factors NF-κB and HIF-1.

Abstract: Peanut root invasion by Bradyrhizobia is through a crack entry, which is different from many other legumes applying an infection thread entry in root hair. Understanding the role of root hair in the crack entry of Bradyrhizobia invasion of peanut root and subsequent peanut nodulation would facilitate improvement of biological nitrogen fixation in cultivated peanut. The objective of this study was to investigate the involvement of root hair in Bradyrhizobial invasion of peanut. Seedling roots of a nodulating peanut

Abstract: The development of the economy has been a major concern of most developing nations such as Nigeria in the provision of infrastructural facilitie and developmental projects that have the potentials of enhancing the standard of living of the citizens and national outputs. But these objectives can not be achieved without adequate source of developmental funds. As a result of various source options of developmental financing this study examined the effect of debt financing mix on economic growth and development in Nigeria strategically from a decade after independence 1970-2007 fiscal years. Major debt financing options were considered in the analysis of this study and the long-run relationship between selected debts financing mix and economic growth proxy as Real Gross Domestic Product (RGDP) was established through the Augmented Engle Granger (AEG) Cointegration test. The entire time series variables data regressed-treasury bill, development stocks, treasury certificate and bond, multilateral debt source in ternational lending clubs and real gross domestic product-were found stationary at first difference excluding series on international lending clubs which was found explosive. The estimated cointegrated regression model formulated revealed the best economic friendly debts financing mix to achieved major macroeconomic targets of the governments. Strategic policy recommendations were proffered based on the findings emanated from the study.

Abstract: A series of polyurethane-polyisocyanurate (PU-PIR) foams synthesized from PET-waste-derived aromatic polyester polyols (APP) was studied using thermogravimetric analysis, Cone calorimeter and burning tests. The effect of chemical structure of the APP containing fragments of glycerol, adipic acid, poly(propylene glycol) or hexanediol on thermal stability and flame resistance of the PU-PIR foams was elucidated. PU-PIR foams prepared from APP containing fragments of glycerol and/or adipic acid had higher thermal stability and lower weight loss at 330 °C. The foams based on APP derived from industrial PET waste were characterized by relatively low heat release and low smoke production. The presence of the fragments of the functional additives glycerol and/or adipic acid in the structure of APP used for production of PU-PIR foams, marginally decreased the heat release and slightly increased the smoke production. http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.3.588

Abstract: The renewed interest in the reactivation of the defunct National Konongo Gold Mine located in the Ashanti Greenstone Belt, calls for a further probe into its geology and the associated mineral hosting structures to discover its mineralization potential. In order to achieve this, airborne magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic datasets were interpreted to determine the potential gold hosting features in the studied area. The results show the area to consist of the metasediment, the metavolcanic, Tartwaian Formation and their associated granitoids. Results also show that the Tarkwaian sediments, observed largely in the north-eastern side of the site; widen out substantially and truncate in the south. The analysis of the structure lineaments using a rose diagram reveals three main tectonic structures trending in N-S, NNW-SSE, and third the structure trending in the NNE-SSW to NE-SW directions in the area. The dominant structures in the area, form 90% of all the delineated structures and trend in the NE-SW and NNE-SSW direction with the remaining 10% trending in the N-S and NNW-SSE. These structures are associated with the major shear and fracture zones located mainly at the contact between the basin sediments and volcanic belt and also associated with the Tarkwaian Formation. The mapped potential gold mineralization zones located mainly at the contact between the metasediment and the metavolcanic units of the Birimian Supergroup, as well as the Tarkwaian Formation, were mapped by integrating the structures, alteration zones as well as the complex dyke systems. This paper delineates the prominent geological structures with the potential of hosting economic gold mineralization in and around the Konongo Gold Mine.
